On Sept. 9, Hermantown will celebrate a community event, the Fall Harvest Festival, a fundraiser for the Hermantown Historical Society.
An admittance fee will be charged: $1 for children 6-18, $2 for adults, and $5 for families. I feel that since this is a community event, it should be free to all those who wish to attend and financially support those who are offering to sell their unique and quality products.
A fee for non-food vendors also is being charged: $40. That's just to have a space for those wanting to sell their products and items. This fee is outrageously high with no guarantee that a vendor who participates will even break even.
For myself, even though this is as a community event and an opportunity to sell quality produce to the public at a bargain price, I just can't justify the cost, considering the amount of product and effort it would take just to cover the vendor fee. For example, at $10 a bushel, I would have to sell four bushels of apples or a considerable amount of vegetables just to recover my cost.
I have to say that those who are making the decisions for this community event for sure are out of touch and really don't seem to have a clue or concern for the participants or know the value of a dollar or what it takes to make one.
