I have many memories of hours and entire days spent at the Duluth zoo during my childhood, later as an adult with my children and grandchildren, and as a chaperone for the youth of our local church. These are happy memories, filled with the curiosity, wonder and joy of seeing birds and animals through the eyes of children, as well as the never-ending pleasure I have experienced each time I've visited there.

By contrast, I have the memory of a one-time experience of a visit to what has ridiculously been named an aquarium in the fine city of Duluth. Once was more than enough for me to realize that even though my ticket was complimentary, if I were given another, I certainly wouldn't waste my time in that building, which, in its ugliness, is a blight to the waterfront area and in no way comes even close by comparison to a real aquarium.

How Duluthians can stand quietly by, seeing their dollars wasted on that obnoxious edifice while those in charge consider the possible closing of the Lake Superior Zoo and its beautiful grounds escapes me.

The next lakefront beautification project should be the razing of that monstrosity. Put the money into the zoo.
