I was so interested to read the story about Frank Buckles, the last known U. S. World War I veteran ("At 108, last U.S. WWI vet is link to distant past," Feb. 2).
When I was a kid there were many articles over the years about the last surviving veterans of the Civil War, probably because Albert Woolson, the last Union veteran, lived in Duluth. It seemed like every time a surviving veteran from the South died, there would be an update.
I had been thinking the past few years that there must not be many World War I veterans left, but I never saw any articles about it in any of the newspapers we read from various parts of the U.S. So thanks to the News Tribune for printing the story about Frank Buckles, who really sounds like a with-it 108-year-old.
