I read with amusement the Sept. 9 letter complaining about the bear-hunting season in Minnesota beginning Sept. 1 (Reader's View: "Bear hunters, tourists a dangerous mix"). The letter's solution was moving the opening date from Sept. 1 to Sept. 15.
First off, by Sept. 15, the partridge-hunting season begins, and the sound of those shotguns also would startle the flora/fauna crowd, if we use the letter's rationale. I've been hunting for a lifetime up here and never - let me repeat, never - have I felt unsafe in the woods during hunting season, as the letter also suggested.
Second, we have more state parks up here than we need and a national park. Hunting is not allowed in those areas. So, obviously, anyone who wants to take pictures of the flora and fauna can go to those places. There they won't have to feel afraid of firearms.
This environmental-extremist business is getting too far out of hand. Hunters have the same right to be in the woods enjoying their hobby as photographers.
By the way, I also am a photographer and own a spotting scope with camera attachment.
