Reader's view: End war to get US economy back on track

How can the United States of America improve our economy? One of the most obvious ways (to me) is to stop this war that is costing us billions of dollars a week and countless lives of our military men and women, a war that cannot possibly be won.

We didn't learn anything from the Vietnam War, and here we are again, more than 10 years into yet another debacle we cannot possibly win.

Terrorists (in my opinion) are only spoilers. This is their agenda: They operate out of jealousy and religious differences; they try to destroy what someone else has. Terrorists are small units, often only one or two individuals, which makes it very difficult to find them. There have been terrorists for many years and I suppose there will be many more decades into the future. There's always someone willing to take their place when they are caught or killed.

You may ask "What about World Wars I and II"? These two wars were fought to control the aggression of one country over the land of another country. In World War II, Japan's aggression was to get not only land but natural resources. The Japanese needed oil, rubber and steel (iron) to complete their aggression, and taking the U.S. Navy out of action, they felt, would permit that. Fortunately, we won that war, but at great cost of money and lives. We ended that peril of conquest by Japan. Many people have us to thank for the freedom they have today.

We certainly cannot go to war after every terrorist. We must be vigilant and catch them in the act when possible. This is the job for the CIA and the FBI. Our military men and women have done a great job in the face of a no-win situation.
