If you are like me, one of the first items you look for in the News Tribune is the editorial. What you may not pay attention to is the fact that the printed editorial is the culmination of discussion and debate by the editorial board of the News Tribune.

The editorial board consists of the publisher, the editorial page editor, a News Tribune employee representative and two citizen representatives. I have been fortunate to serve as citizen representative. I say fortunate since I have had the opportunity to meet with state and local leaders of government and commerce, as well as individuals with important messages for our region. I have then had the good fortune of discussing and debating the merits of the issues with the rest of the editorial board. Sometimes a consensus was reached; sometimes there was dissent among the members. The discussions, debates, and different points of view have been both enlightening and stimulating.

The message from the editorial page serves to enlighten readers in the region. As an individual, you may agree with a particular editorial or you may disagree.

Your chance to influence the content of the editorials published in the News Tribune is approaching. As I end my three-month tenure of service on the board, a call will be put out for my replacement. I urge everyone to jump at the opportunity, specifically those who, like me, are from Northwestern Wisconsin. Without being univocal in your mindset, you can serve the community and help bring community ideas and opinions to the region.

Please call Editorial Page Editor Chuck Frederick at (218) 723-5316 to throw your hat into the ring. Serving as a citizen representative on the editorial board of the News-Tribune is a valuable and rewarding experience.
