Fourteen years ago, Ray and I moved from Duluth to Washington state, north of Seattle, closer to my daughter.
Before going, we sat down with pen and paper to make a list. If we really move, what do we need in our environment? We knew we would miss the beauty of Duluth. Our list included evergreen trees, state parks, water, changing seasons, wildlife, and university. We do indeed have all of those things here, plus majestic mountains.
Ray and I each had spent almost 30 years of our life in Duluth. The fine city forever will be etched in our memories, and many remembrances make us smile. Our hangouts were Brighton Beach, the Lester River, Seven Bridges Road, and Perkin's on London Road. In the winter we loved University of Minnesota Duluth hockey. In the summer we did annual Vista cruises to learn about the ships in the harbor. We had more fun with garage sales. And many lazy days of summer found us on a rock at Brighton Beach, soaking our feet in Lake Superior.
We made awesome friends, including Ray from Goodwill, as he drove the forklift and helped on trucks, and my coworkers at Nekton, a public and government services firm (now REM) and then St. Ann's residency.
We are very happy we made the move 14 years ago. We really don't miss the snow and below-zero temperatures. But the fine city of Duluth always will have a pleasant place in our thoughts.
