Recently, my husband and I had visitors from Ohio. It was a first-time visit for them to this part of Minnesota. Mike, our male visitor, is an architectural engineer and owns his own engineering company in Ohio. As we drove Mike and his wife throughout the city of Duluth, he kept asking, "Where are the slums?"

We drove down Highway 23 through Fond du Lac and on the off roads in New Duluth where I was raised. We drove through the area around Commonwealth Avenue, down the main road in Morgan Park, along Grand Avenue and in every other way we could go. We covered the West End (now called Lincoln Park) and London Road and made our way on the scenic route to Two Harbors. And again, "Where are the slums?" We drove through Hermantown on Stebner and Arrowhead roads, to name a couple. In other words, we didn't go the same way twice during our visitors' stay. Always, "Where are the slums?"

Mike noted that while Duluth has many very old houses, the majority looked to be in good repair. I proudly told him people in this area take a great deal of pride in their communities.

To the people of Duluth and the surrounding area, be proud of your city. People here really are hard workers overall and take pride in their surroundings. My hat is off to you!
