When I heard a pedestrian was hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk it came as no surprise to me ("Bayfield man charged in Superior Street hit and run," Aug. 15). I see cars use the sidewalk all the time to turn at an intersection to avoid a red light. Though not as common as running a red light or jumping the light, this is getting more common.
Drivers are just too much in a hurry nowadays. They seem to think they always have the right of way. I've had many times while crossing on a walk signal a driver yell at me, telling me to get out of his way or to hurry up. Some just almost hit me while I'm crossing and they're turning, or they just won't let me cross, especially on intersections where the light is short for pedestrians.
I've also seen cars pull out of driveways and parking lots without looking to see if there are any pedestrians or cars coming.
I am not saying pedestrians are always in the right; I see people cross in the middle of the street, on a red light or cross the intersection at an angle, which I know is frustrating for drivers.
We all need to show some common courtesy to each other and there would be fewer accidents between cars and pedestrians.
