Reader's view: Don't vote to legalize discrimination

When two people who love each other agree to marriage or a civil union, no Minnesotans are hurt. If we vote to legalize and condone discrimination against 10 percent of our citizenry, all Minnesotans are hurt.

I've heard proponents of the Minnesota marriage amendment proposal argue that if we allow lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people to marry then what next? People marrying their dog or cat? This question is ridiculous on its face.

I have a legitimate question: If we vote to legalize and condone discrimination against 10 percent of our population, then what next? Can the bigotry genie be put back in the bottle? What group will be discriminated against next?

Please vote "no" on this amendment.
