There have been letters regarding mental illness. Mental illness is just as real as diabetes, Alzheimer's and other illnesses. There shouldn't be any doubt about it.
A good support system can help sufferers see they're not alone. Support can come from family, friends, professionals or a support group.
There is some caution in seeking support, however. Be aware of people who say how a sufferer should feel, think or behave. A good support system is one that helps a person who is ill remain calm. They are spoken to calmly. They have their strengths pointed out. Time is spent with them, listening to what they have to say, allowing them to cry, and setting limits on anger and out-of-control behavior. True support isn't critical, doesn't make fun and doesn't say it's all in someone's head.
When you're suffering from mental illness, you may have trust issues. It may take time before you trust someone with your thoughts. By talking to someone you can establish a higher level of trust. To adults and teens who suffer from mental illness, I say try to reach out to your support system; don't hide. People may not understand, but there are some who do. Struggles can be overcome with positive support. It won't be an overnight doing. It takes time.
Some people with mental illness may think no one cares. I do, and others do, too.

Dolly Parton has a song, and one of the lines in it is: "I can make it if you say I can." Anyone can make it because others say they can. They need to keep telling themselves they can. They need to believe and trust in their belief.
Please reach out. Don't stuff those feelings. I care and God cares. Life gets better. I know.
