Reader's View: Don’t forget to tip the band, too

At least one group was left out of the March 31 story posted at duluthnewstribune.com, "Tipping tips: Who to pay and how much." Left out were musicians and other entertainers.

While what they do is a labor of love for most of them, musicians (as well as other entertainers, such as magicians, comedians, etc.) invest a lot of time, effort, and money into their craft. That’s not to mention hauling, setting up, tearing down, and operating sound equipment. Venues usually pay very little, with typical "gig pay" being about the same as it was 40 years ago. Cover charges are rare these days. I often say, "We get paid for hauling gear; the music is free."

I'd like to suggest a guideline for tipping entertainers: Whatever you tip your bartenders and servers over the course of an evening, consider tipping the band about the same. After all, did we not provide at least as much value to you as they did?
