I was struck by the irony, which probably was unintended, in the Sept. 8 letter, "Obama turning country away from God." The writer stated that gay people are "living a life of adultery along with prostitutes and people cohabitating." Yet she indicated that she opposes marriage rights for same-sex couples. So then there is no way out for committed same-sex couples?
No matter how faithful they are to one another, how productive they are as members of society, and how loving they are as parents, family members and friends, they are doomed to be adulterers, should people like the letter writer have their way.
Marriage is both a civic right and a religious rite, which explains why it is so difficult for some to accept.
I believe churches should have the right to marry or not marry couples based on their particular religious beliefs. However, in this country, we have a separation between church and state. The civic right to marry should not be denied based on the religious beliefs of some.
Please join me in voting "no" on the marriage amendment in November.
