The News Tribune endorsement policy encourages voting without a primary consideration of candidates’ political principles and political values. This results in the kind of divided government we are now experiencing, which does not work in the best interest of voters.
An example of such inconsistency was in the newspaper’s endorsements of legislative candidates in Duluth. The News Tribune endorsed Donna Bergstrom, a Republican, over Erik Simonson, a DFLer, for Senate District 7. And it endorsed Cody Barringer, a Republican, over Liz Olson, a DFLer, for House District 7B. At the same time, the News Tribune endorsed Rep. Jennifer Schultz, a DFLer, over Republican Dylan Raddant for House District 7A. Simonson and Schultz currently serve in the House and have complemented each other’s work well. Bergstrom and Barringer would, I fear, if elected, cancel Schultz’s initiatives on many issues affecting our community and ignore the outstanding job she and Simonson have done over the past two years.
You should vote for the candidates who will carry forward the values and the political philosophies that reflect your own. The DFL-endorsed candidates Erik Simonson, Liz Olson and Jen Schultz will serve as an effective and complementary team for our community in the Legislature.
