The News Tribune's April 13 story, "Tax debate divides Democrats," prompted this letter. The story stated, "Legislative Democrats appear to agree with Gov. Mark Dayton's proposal to increase taxes on the richest 2 percent of Minnesotans."

Do you agree with that? Did you rub your hands and say, "Go get 'em!"? Did you mentally describe the 2 percent as all Republicans? That's what the governor would have you believe, that it is only wealthy Republicans who don't pay their fair share. Oh yes, does any politician define fair share? You better believe they don't.

Your governor and the Legislature are majority DFL -- yes, Democrats. Who do you think contributes to their campaigns? It sure isn't Republicans. It is Democrats -- wealthy Democrats. It is the wealthy 2 percent. It's kind of strange to think of Democrats as wealthy.

The story further stated there's a House plan to add a tax surcharge on top of Gov. Dayton's earlier plan to raise the current tax rate on the wealthiest 2 percent. Wow! "On top of, on top of:" these Democrats sure know how to hurt their buddies.

Having talked of taxes and revenues, the article then spoke of spending. That's the real problem.

Do you want your Democratic governor and Democratic Legislature to commit $200 million as their share of the new $1 billion Vikings stadium? Already, pull-tab revenue destined for stadium bond redemption is way less than projected. Any shortfall will come out of the general fund (which is used for roads, education, Medicaid, rent supplement, etc.).

Is any of this news to you? Please read the News Tribune. This is your state. (It was mine long ago.) You are responsible for what happens to it.
