The 8th Congressional District just took a step closer to the leadership it so sorely needs. The ability to align and combine opposing parties to promote a common goal is both admirable and rare. It is unusual for a politician to set aside influence, position and ego for the purpose of supporting a strong opponent while seeking a common end.

On Sept. 8, Tim Olson, the Independence Party candidate for the 8th Congressional District, took the extraordinary action of merging his hopes for America with GOP 8th Congressional candidate Chip Cravaack. This spoke volumes about both men.

Olson judged that Cravaack is a trustworthy vehicle for his sincere hopes for the future of the 8th District. The U.S. Navy and Northwest Airlines both made the same conclusion about Cravaack: He is a pillar of trust and accomplishment.

This isn't the first competitor to join the Cravaack juggernaut. Mike Cummins, who ran against U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar in 2008, chose to suspend his congressional campaign to support Cravaack, who has established himself as the real deal.

Cravaack is a compelling candidate with a commanding record of achievement.
