The story about falling youth smoking rates was good news (“Cigarette use drops among teens; e-cigs tempting,” Nov. 11). Many people suffer the horrible impacts of tobacco use, and I have no interest in watching the next generation get addicted to cigarettes. I work with many college students who wish they never started smoking and who struggle every day to quit smoking.
In Minnesota the tobacco tax is high. A typical pack of cigarettes costs at least $7, and that should deter many youths from picking up the habit. At the same time, the popularity of
e-cigarettes is growing. I know our community has taken steps to put common-sense limits on where e-cigarettes can be smoked out in public. I hope that good work continues.
We need it.
