Can someone explain? This is in response to Joseph Legueri's column on Oct. 14, headlined, "God: Period or question mark?"
The Bible can be seen as a history of humans growing in knowing God. At first they thought God was just like us, vengeful and violent and temperamental. As they drew closer and their vision grew clearer, many of the old ideas fell away. Societies changed, people changed, but God never has changed. We continue learning. Some people still see God as approving cruelty, punitive, partial to some nations, and favoring some people. Christians who believe this still have growing to do.
Since there is so much that is still a mystery to us, why should we reject God completely? Right now, our only law is love, and we even find that hard to learn.
