I want to point out that the somewhat alarmist headline on moose mortality on the front page of the March 18 edition of the News Tribune was in no way supported by the data in the article ("Wolves taking toll on Minnesota moose").
It is not clear that the 111 trapped and collared were a random sample of Minnesota moose; data has been collected for just two months, and the two wolf kills may have been moose weakened by capture, making them easy targets.
Any statistician would be able to design an experiment specifically to estimate moose mortality due to wolves.
