Reader's view: A Norwegian welcome for a visiting Scotsman

I am responding to the July 2 letter, "Rotary Club's Enger Tower lighting project a great idea," about the Rotary Club project to upgrade the lighting at Enger Tower. I give my wholehearted support to this endeavor.

The story prompted me to recall a fun experience I had at the 1939 dedication of Enger Tower with Norwegian Prince Olav. I was a 9-year-old boy living at our summer cabin on Pike Lake. My father, David C. Duncan, and I left for the dedication of the tower and ultimately became part of the official Prince Olav motorcade to the tower -- not by invitation but by accident. Dad had attached two Norwegian flags to the front of our new Ford. As we approached the road to the tower, the motorcade was going by; the police, thinking we were part of the motorcade, flagged us to into the back of the line. Dad complied and we were escorted to the tower as if we were official guests. We had a prime location for the formal dedication. It was a fun and unplanned experience for a couple of native Duluthians of Scottish decent.
