Stoddard takes first place in Big Jig contest

A 3-pound sucker won $5,000 for Troy Stoddard of Duluth in Sunday's Big Jig Fishing Contest on Pike Lake. Stoddard caught a 3.02-pound sucker to take first place among nearly 1,000 anglers, said Sue MacDonald, coordinator of business and ticket sales for the University of Minnesota Duluth athletic department.

The UMD athletic department sponsors the contest, which raises about $50,000 each year for student-athlete scholarships. This was the 10th annual Big Jig.

The contest drew a tough day, with brisk northwest winds and, for part of the event, heavy snow. Nearly all of the fish were caught in the first hour and a half of the noon-to-3 p.m. contest, before the snow started, MacDonald said.

Gina Socha of Duluth took 100th place -- and its $1,000 prize -- with a .17-pound perch.

Here's how the top five rounded out:

     2. David Kroll, Duluth, 2.05-pound sucker

     3. Dave Arnold, Duluth, 1.59-pound sucker

     4. Lyle Hunt, Cotton, .395-pound poerch
