     Soon after the Minnesota's fishing opener (May 15, of course), you'll be able to put your fishing skills on the line for cash and other prizes. A whole slate of fishing contests awaits you in the early season.

     For many years, at least one fishing contest and sometimes two have been held on opening day of Minnesota's fishing season on the St. Louis River, but the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources no longer permits walleye fishing contests on opening weekend or any tournaments on holiday weekends.

    Here's the list:

Grand Slam Walleye Tournament -- May 22-23, St. Louis River, SpiritLakeMarina, Duluth. Entry fee, $230 per two-person team ($250 after May 10). Payout based on 80 percent of registrations. More information, contact Tom Pfister, (218) 348-0700.

City Auto Glass Walleye Classic -- May 22, LakeVermilion. Entry fee, $200. First place, $10,000. Go to www.cagwalleyeclassic.com .

Jaws Fishing Derby -- June 4-6, Lake Superior and St. Louis River. Entry fee, $20 for adults, $10 for kids under 16, $50 for pro division. First prize in lake trout, salmon and walleye categories, $300; pro division payout based on 80 percent payback. For more information, go to www.wlsta.org .

Kolar Toyota ALS Walleye Tournament -- June 5, Island Lake north of Duluth, starting time 6 a.m., entry fee, $175; more information or to register, contact sandy@alsmn.org .

Leech Lake Walleye Tournament -- June 5-6, LeechLake. Entry fee, $150. First place, $12,000 (based on 150 teams). Go to www.leechlakewalleyetournament.com .

McGregor Area Lakes Fishing Tournament -- June 5, McGregor area lakes. Entry fee, $75 per team. First prize, $1,200. For information, go to www.mcgregormn.com .

United Northern Sportsmen's Club Summer Fishing Contest -- June 12-13, Island Lake. Entry fee, $5 donation, may be purchased at Chalstrom's Bait and Tackle or at the UNS Clubhouse during the contest. For more information, call (218) 721-4843.
