Our view: Who deserves to win Duluth's Golden Shovel Award?

Just about anyone in Duluth trying to get anywhere on foot these days finds themselves, sooner or later, complaining about the snow-buried, ice-slicked and too-oft-ignored sidewalks. Especially this harsh, harsh winter of impassable walkways.

Just about anyone in Duluth trying to get anywhere on foot these days finds themselves, sooner or later, complaining about the snow-buried, ice-slicked and too-oft-ignored sidewalks. Especially this harsh, harsh winter of impassable walkways.

But what about our shovel-armed and blower-pushing neighbors who go above and beyond, who clear not only their driveways and walks but help out others, too? What about those Duluthians who are out there early, making sure everyone can get to work, never expecting anything in return?

The snow-free public sidewalk advocacy group known as Duluth Digs: Winter Mobility for All wants to hear about our wintertime's unsung heroes. The newly formed group is seeking nominations for Golden Shovel Awards.

"We want to recognize those community-minded individuals, groups and neighborhoods who best exemplify Duluth's tradition of community spirit," Duluth Digs' Drew Digby said in a statement.

Nominations can be sent to the group's Tom Kasper at tkasper@duluthmn.gov or at (218) 730-4490. Include the name, address and phone number of the person or group being nominated and a short write-up about what they do and why they deserve to be recognized as a community hero.
