Our view: Grandma's is only the beginning

Keep it down, would ya? Duluth's trying to sleep. What a weekend. Crowds. Runners. Music. Spaghetti. Winners. Finishers. Late nights. Early mornings. And not enough Advil. It was a whirlwind worthy of Grandma's Marathon.

But the hangover can't last long. Summer has just begun. Today is only its second day, and the 70 or so days ahead are as chock full as the beer tent on Saturday night in Canal Park.

Minnesota's Harley Owners Group -- HOG, for short -- are scheduled to roar into town Thursday for four days of riding and revelry. Then, this weekend, the Park Point Art Fair -- a celebration of art and community -- takes over on the end of Minnesota Point. The 39th annual event is expected to feature the works of 120 artists, live music, activities and food.

Next week, on Tuesday, the "Ice Fishing Play" -- a part of the Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival 2009 -- takes the stage at the Dudley Experimental Theatre in the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Fourth Fest takes its turn at Bayfront Festival Park next weekend, with its spectacular fireworks display, the Los Lonely Boys and a visit from a tall ship.

Three days of downtown sidewalk sales begin July 8, sponsored by the Greater Downtown Council, which also is hosting Rock the Block, a series of six, outdoor, close-off-the-streets concerts and dances.

The fourth annual Bayfront Reggae Festival is July 11, featuring Tanya Stephens, Frankie "Dancehall" Paul and Marcia Griffiths. Spirit Valley Days are July 14-18.

In August, on the second, the 23rd annual Brewhouse Triathlon is scheduled. The Root Beer Kids Triathlon is the day before. Grab your lawn chairs for the 21st annual Bayfront Blues Festival, Aug. 7-9, featuring, among many others, Cyril Neville, Los Lobos, Ian Parker, and the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue. The can't-miss Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is Aug. 21-22.

Huskies games are all summer long at Wade Stadium and "Movies in the Park" are every Friday night in Leif Erikson Park.

And those are just the highlights. And just for the summer.

Autumn brings the Duluth-Superior Pride Festival, the NorthShore Inline Marathon, a 10-hour triathlon, Boo at the Zoo, the Haunted Ship inside the William A. Irvin, the annual Gales of November event and more.
