Chaos? Disunity? Those and similarly negative words were used in the media to describe last week’s Republican National Convention. I’m curious what convention the media attended.
For five days, starting a week ago today, I as a Minnesota at-large delegate to the GOP convention in Cleveland was completely consumed with everything political. As a result, I didn’t have a lot of time to catch what the media was reporting. That had to come later. Instead, I was on the floor of the convention experiencing something rather different than what I ended up reading about in the news.Yes, there were some disappointments along the way, but they paled in comparison to the true show of unity witnessed by me and my fellow delegates on the floor.I wish the governor of Ohio, John Kasich, would have attended the convention to show his support for the GOP nominee.I wish the disagreement with the rules had had a better result. And I wish everyone understood that Sen. Ted Cruz wasn’t required to endorse the nominee. Several of the 15 one-time Republican presidential candidates did endorse Trump; a handful did not. Cruz showed up anyway to encourage the convention to continue its fight for the freedom and liberty that only the GOP can deliver.President Ronald Reagan once said in the infamous speech titled “A Rendezvous with Destiny” that we will never agree with our compatriots 100 percent of the time, but that if we can 80 percent of the time we’ll be on the right path together. I believe that’s the GOP we have today.I guess the convention may have looked a little like chaos and disunity when viewed through the eye of a microscope and when every little detail is viewed as a mishap or misstep. But zoom back a bit and you’ll see that Trump’s campaign nailed several themes throughout the week that truly united the GOP rather than dividing it. Those themes were titled “Make America Safe Again,” “Make America Work Again,” “Make America First Again” and “Make America One Again.”We all agreed these themes will “Make America Great Again,” as Trump’s campaign slogan promises. It’s these ideals that truly unite us.Now we take this message across this great country where I know it will unite us as Americans, too.
