Reader's View: Those not showing up also responsible

The News Tribune’s June 1 editorial stated, “ Anyone who chooses to participate (in additional protests) … can also choose to ensure gatherings remain peaceful. Those with an interest in the issues … can stand up to those few hellbent on destruction and disruption.”

But we all have an interest in these issues, and it is our collective responsibility to help our protests remain peaceful — by adding our voices to the call for change. Those who bear the greatest responsibility for the violence in our streets aren’t those of us protesting, or the people of color who are impacted by structural racism and discriminatory policing. It’s those of us who aren’t showing up at all.
