As the president crisscrosses America holding rallies with crowds neither social distancing nor wearing many masks, one can only presume he is recklessly enacting his latest laissez-faire approach to COVID-19. In President Donald Trump’s own words, it’s "herd mentality."
To achieve “herd immunity” one must accept a death toll in the millions — and not nameless, faceless, cold statistics but the lives lost of our friends, our family, and our neighbors. The magic-bullet hopes placed in a viable, widely distributed vaccine are still far on the horizon. Until then, we are at the mercy of a president spreading misinformation and a deadly virus at every political stop.
The middle of September marked the 200,000th COVID-19 death in the U.S. death, making this pandemic the fourth-deadliest loss-of-life event in our nation’s history.
Maybe the man sworn to protect this nation callously considers these numbers a win in the war against COVID-19; however, to those of us who already have sacrificed and lost so much, we do not.
