Reader's View: Stauber disregarded his oaths of office

By not supporting the results of the Electoral College and by supporting President Donald Trump’s countering efforts, Stauber encouraged the unraveling of the very fiber of our society, our democracy.

As one of Congressman Pete Stauber’s constituents, I did not understand his blatant disregard for the very laws he swore to uphold — more than four times (“ Stauber joins bid to invalidate millions of votes, overturn election ,” Dec. 11).

As a police officer in Duluth, he took an oath to uphold the laws of this land. As a Hermantown city councilor, he took an oath (the same oath I took when I was a Hermantown city councilor from 1992 to 2000) to uphold the Constitution of the United States. As a St. Louis County commissioner, he again took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. And as a U.S. House member, he took an oath one more time to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the laws of this land.

The congressional oath, as prescribed in Title 5, Section 3331 of the United States Code, reads, “I (name) do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

Stauber’s support of the attempt to overturn the legitimate presidential election was, in my opinion, an act of sedition and treason that should result in his being charged with treason and stripped of not only his congressional seat but also the governmental pensions he is in line to receive.

By not supporting the results of the Electoral College and by supporting President Donald Trump’s countering efforts, Stauber encouraged the unraveling of the very fiber of our society, our democracy.
