Reader's View: MAGA movement seems based on myths, lies

MAGA is an authoritarian personality cult that tried to overthrow our democracy in a wide-ranging coup.

A “Local View” column in the News Tribune Sept. 7 extolled the supposed virtues of the MAGA movement (“ MAGA movement isn’t evil; its ideals benefit all Americans ”).

It stated that President Joe Biden claimed that power “going back to … the people” was a bad thing, but Biden never said that.

It claimed that “every single citizen” should stand behind MAGA ideologies, but America has always been a place of diverse and opposing views. Lockstep conformity is actually unAmerican.

The writer suggested Democrats have been gaslighted, but that look into the funhouse mirror reflects a tactic of the leader of the MAGA movement, who often accuses his enemies of doing what he himself is doing.

The columnist said MAGA is about, “most of all, keeping God involved in our lives.” What god was it that motivated MAGA neo-Nazis and the KKK to march and riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017? What god endorses the racism and bigotry on display in the speech and policies of MAGA politicians?

The writer said MAGA endorses “less government involvement in (our) lives.” But this doesn’t apparently extend to a woman’s right to control her own reproductive system.

He said MAGA represents “law and order,” but one look at MAGA’s response to its leader’s legal troubles suggests otherwise.

We’re told MAGA resists the “indoctrination” of children, which can only mean educating children about things MAGA supporters do not like.

We were told in the column that MAGA wants to preserve our history, “both the good and the bad.” Yet Republicans are banning books and outlawing teaching historical topics across the country.

MAGA is an authoritarian personality cult that tried to overthrow our democracy in a wide-ranging coup. Its leader seems to have little regard whatsoever for the good of our country and is rightly under investigation for numerous, serious crimes. MAGA seems based on myths and lies.

Letters to the editor are a critical part of the community dialogue, and the News Tribune attempts to publish all letters of opinion meeting our requirements.
Letters are limited to 300 words, must be the original work of the author and must be exclusive to the News Tribune. Letters are edited for style, space, accuracy and civility. Letter writers are limited to one published submission every 30 days.
With rare exceptions, the News Tribune does not publish poetry; letters that are anonymous, libelous, or attack other writers; consumer-complaint letters; thank-you letters or letters generated by political or special-interest campaigns.
We will consider exclusive local view columns of about 600 words or fewer. Authors should possess unique insights, and their commentaries should demonstrate greater knowledge of their subject than letters.
