Reader's View: Improve Duluth by covering more interstate
Covering the freeway in the downtown area would connect the two now-separated commercial districts of downtown and Canal Park, allowing people to walk in between
I just read the number again: Duluth covered three quarters of a mile of Interstate 35, resulting in Gichi-Ode' Akiing (originally called Lake Place), Leif Erikson Park, and more. People have access to these areas now. They can safely walk, ride, sit, and enjoy in these areas, which would not have been possible if the interstate had been built on grade.
Since it’s not, we have good clean air, reduced noise, and total freedom to take in the lake or check out the thousands of roses. How can anything be more perfect? And travelers driving along the interstate in the tunnels below can arrive at their destinations without endangering pedestrians and bikes. Air pollution is even solved, with tunnel air collected and treated.
Places were created for exercise, walking, jogging, looking, watching, and joining in song and enjoyment without surrounding traffic and without the dangers of conflicting traffic.
To be able to achieve a half mile more of this is just plain exciting to think about (Our View: “ Be bold with interstate rebuild in downtown Duluth ,” May 25).
Duluth has put up with the traffic impacts and inconveniences of the present interstate through downtown for far too long. Covering the freeway in the downtown area would connect the two now-separated commercial districts of downtown and Canal Park, allowing people to walk in between. Call it a healthy breath and walk, because that is what we would receive. Imagine living without the vehicular air pollution dragged to Duluth all the way from Texas.
Enough already. Bring back natural and healthy Duluth, please. We’ll be thankful for doing so.
