Reader's View: I enjoy jokes about my heritage

What kind of intolerant society are we creating? The recent effort to discontinue the use of the word “chief” in city job titles was an example of our society’s over-sensitivity to anything and everything (“ Council tables title change ,” June 23). Personally, I would be proud to be considered a chief. To me it reflects the positive attributes of strength, knowledge, and leadership.

It seems it is no longer politically correct to enjoy a funny ethnic joke. I don’t get my nose out of joint when I hear or read an ethnic joke about my heritage. I enjoy the humor that is intended. Funny Ole and Lena jokes have forever been a favorite to enjoy, even with my partial Scandinavian roots.

I may be old school, but to me the play on words and titles creates more decisiveness than less. With the physical, emotional, and financial hardships the coronavirus has created, I feel our public officials can better spend their time and efforts solving real-life issues, not manufactured sensitivity issues.
