Reader's View: Forcing schools to reopen callous, shortsighted

Reader's View.jpg

Wisconsin’s District 7 congressional Rep. Tom Tiffany recently submitted House Bill HR 7152 for the purpose of forcing all schools to physically reopen to all students under penalty of the federal government withholding of all educational funding. Tiffany’s mindless parroting of President Donald Trump’s inept school-opening proposal is truly disgusting and dangerous.

There is absolutely no thought being given to protecting the students and vulnerable educational staff from the current pandemic since any federal aid required to reopening the schools is totally lacking in Tiffany’s bill. Tiffany’s bill, as written, would put all students and staff at unnecessary risk for an illness that can ultimately lead to death or life-long organ injury.

Schools need to reopen as quickly but also as safely as possible. But they need the necessary funding and resources to do so. Forcing schools to reopen without providing the means to do so is callous and shortsighted.

Tiffany’s bill would please Trump’s vanity but would not protect our most treasured resource, which is our children.
