Reader's View: DTA makeover isn’t an improvement

Who wants to walk six blocks?

Reader's View.jpg

I just read the Feb. 18 story, “ Twin Ports readies for historic transit makeover in 2022 ,” and I am not any more impressed with the Duluth Transit Authority than I had been. In fact, I am more disappointed.

The article stated that “high-frequency lines are only going to stop, give or take, every six blocks." What about people with young children; seniors; and people with canes, walkers, wheelchairs, or other handicaps? Who wants to walk six blocks? This is Duluth. Our weather — with its wind, wet, and cold — is not the best for walking. Plus, in the winter, many sidewalks are not shoveled.

What about bus riders carrying groceries?

Also, I wonder about the bus going to the mall. Will riders have to transfer? Currently, there are many nice buses from which riders don't have to transfer.

I have lived in Duluth all my life. I used to be proud of our bus system. Not anymore. I feel like the DTA is taking away my ability to get from place to place.

This is an improvement? I don't think so.
