Reader's View: Distancing needs to include Trump, too

Reader's View.jpg

Like thousands of others around the region and country, many of us are glued to reputable news sources for up-to-date information on the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Repeatedly, we hear “social distancing” as a method of tamping down the spread. Avoiding contact with others could help “flatten the curve,” we hear.

Then we are shown the president and members of his coronavirus task force — which includes him, Vice President Mike Pence, and assorted medically credentialed people — all crowded shoulder-to-shoulder in a scrum in front of a single microphone. Included in the task force is Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is considered an expert on infectious diseases. We watch them crowd together, defying their very own so-called expert advice, which recommends a minimum of six feet between individuals. I’m very disappointed in the entire task force for its apparent lack of common-sense behavior. The credibility of the president can’t be worse, but experts like Dr. Fauci are jeopardizing moral and ethical authority. Participating in this scrum is foolhardy, to say the least. How many others have been exposed to this virus because of the poor role-modeling of these so-called frontliners in this battle?

Social distancing, not showmanship, is recommended for everyone — the president included.
