The News Tribune’s June 14 “Our View” editorial (“ Give a flap, flap a flag: It’s Flag Day ”) stated that, "A congressman named Francis Hopkinson claimed to design the U.S. flag."
In fact, scholars now credit Hopkinson as the American flag's designer. Sources include the 2005 book "Flag: An American Biography," by Marc Leepson. Also, the Flag Manufacturers Association of America tweeted on Feb. 4, 2021, “#FlagFact: The designer of the American flag was Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New Jersey.”
