Reader's View: Celebrate every womb as a safe place

Driving through Duluth, two billboards have caught my attention.

One says, “Abortion is healthcare.” My immediate gut response is, “Not for the baby, it isn’t.”

The second one shows a picture of a woman with the caption, “Not just a womb.” I wonder whoever said that’s all a woman was. Everyone knows human beings are more than one-dimensional, but women have a wonderful gift from God in providing a place for new life to begin and grow.

I, for one, am thankful for my own womb, which bore me a beautiful son. I’m thankful for my mother’s womb, which bore me and my eight amazing siblings. I’m thankful for my sisters’ wombs, which bore me many beautiful nieces and nephews. I’m thankful for those nieces’ wombs, which bore me great-nieces and great-nephews. And for those great-nieces’ wombs, which bore me great-great nieces. I’m thankful for the wombs of my friends’ mothers, which gave me faithful, trustworthy friends. I’m thankful for the womb of my mother-in-law, which gave me my kind, generous, hardworking husband and his amazing sisters. And this list goes on and on.

A womb is supposed to be a safe, nurturing place for babies to grow and develop and for new life to be celebrated and looked forward to with anticipation. Now, apparently, it’s something to be ashamed of, and we certainly know it’s not a safe place anymore.
