Reader's View: Bill would end Big Oil’s tax loopholes

Did you know the U.S. spends about 10 times as much on fossil-fuel subsidies as it does on education? Fossil-fuel companies have been working for decades to cast doubt on the reality of human-induced climate change. Now we are reaping the bitter fruits of this campaign of disinformation.

We have more destructive forest fires and hurricanes and more extensive flooding. We are seeing dying coral reefs, thinning Arctic ice cover, rising sea levels, and more disastrous storm surges along our coasts. The glaciers are in retreat, and the crucial Antarctic ice sheets are showing signs of instability. The 10 hottest years in the history of record keeping all have occurred since 2005.

What can an ordinary citizen do? A bill called the End Polluter Welfare Act has been introduced by a group of six U.S. senators. It would eliminate about $150 billion over the next decade in the tax loopholes and subsidies that have enabled fossil-fuel companies to evade their responsibilities in the name of short-term profit. Please demand action and support efforts like this. It is one small step on the way to mitigating the potentially disastrous effects of man-made global warming.

Do we listen to the climate scientists who have told us for years that bold and decisive action is necessary to prevent catastrophe? Or do we turn our backs on future generations and tell them that the actions necessary to preserve a clean and healthy environment are just too darn inconvenient?
