My biggest takeaway from COP26 was that fossil-fuel interests seem to be in firm control of our governments, economic systems, and future — or lack thereof. They have the power and influence to confuse us, blurring our wants with needs, successfully redefining needs to include much more than what is needed for the health and happiness of people and relatives all around Mother Earth.

Sorry, children, kinder, niños, деца, børn, 孩子们, lapset, menyuam, anak-anak, figli, 어린이들, kanak-kanak, хүүхдүүд, caruur, watoto, เด็ก, bọn trẻ, and izingane. Sorry, Tondo, Mumbai, Yucatan, Fuveme, Saint-Louis (Senegal), Lagos, Cote d’Ivoire, Inuit, Saami, Aleut, Athabaskans, Gwich', Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Myanmar, and Haiti.

Sorry, dogs, cats, birds, horses, coral, penguins, sea turtles, manatees, and so many other relatives.

Best wishes, Nibi, Gichigamiing and Misi-ziib. When we are gone, may you get over us quickly. We have been unworthy. Sorry to everyone who Needs you as you are.

Most of all, sorry, Mother Earth, Nimaamaa-aki, Gaia, Moeder Aarde, Terre-Mère, Mutter Erde, Madre Tierra, and 母地球. No excuses. Just sorry.

Letters are limited to 300 words, must be the original work of the author and must be exclusive to the News Tribune. Letters are edited for style, space, accuracy and civility.

Letter writers are limited to one published submission every 30 days.

With rare exceptions, the News Tribune does not publish poetry; letters that are anonymous, libelous or attack other writers; consumer-complaint letters; thank-you letters; or letters generated by political or special-interest campaigns.

We will consider exclusive Local View columns of 600 words or fewer. Authors should possess unique insights, and their commentaries should demonstrate greater knowledge of their subject than letters.
