As April comes to an end, so does Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
This semester, I am an intern at PAVSA, or the Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault. I am interning at PAVSA because I believe it will benefit my future career in law enforcement. Knowing that one day I may interview someone after they are sexually assaulted, I want to make sure I do not re-victimize them. I want to be trauma-informed. Also, I believe PAVSA training will positively impact the lives of everyone with whom I come into contact.
To intern at PAVSA, I completed a 40-hour training which included information on cultural diversity and trauma-informed care. My goals at PAVSA are to advocate for all individuals and help them in any way I can. These goals drive me to make a difference because I do not want individuals to go through this process without a support system behind them.
Advocacy is fundamental in the recovery process for anyone who is sexually assaulted. I truly believe the work I do here at PAVSA is helping people feel safer and is saving lives. I am extremely happy to be part of a team that believes in what they do and are enthusiastic to show up to work every morning. I believe in PAVSA’s mission and want to continue to make a difference within the Duluth community.
