I support Nevada Littlewolf’s campaign to add the proposed Page Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution. (As executive director and campaign manager for Our Children MN, Littlewolf wrote the Jan. 30 “Local View” column in the News Tribune headlined, “Here's one change to boost our failing public education system.”)

Alan Page was a Minnesota Vikings football star and a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Statistics in Minnesota showing low educational achievements by racial and ethnic minorities are unacceptable and must be improved. Half of the state budget is appropriated to public schools and colleges, and it should be equal and fair to the Constitution.

I urge everyone to contact their state legislators to place this very important legislation on the next election ballot for citizens to approve. Our Legislature is meeting until the end of May, but because of committee deadlines, this legislation must be processed by the end of March to make it to the Minnesota House and Senate in time to pass and in time for the governor to sign into law.

Letters are limited to 300 words, must be the original work of the author and must be exclusive to the News Tribune. Letters are edited for style, space, accuracy and civility.

Letter writers are limited to one published submission every 30 days.

With rare exceptions, the News Tribune does not publish poetry; letters that are anonymous, libelous or attack other writers; consumer-complaint letters; thank-you letters; or letters generated by political or special-interest campaigns.

We will consider exclusive Local View columns of 600 words or fewer. Authors should possess unique insights, and their commentaries should demonstrate greater knowledge of their subject than letters.
