Aside from its ability to deliver ballots, the U.S. Postal Service seems to be hated by Republicans because it is a successful and popular government agency. In 2006, the Republican-controlled Congress sabotaged the USPS by forcing it to prepay health benefits for future retirees 75 years into the future, unlike any other government agency. The USPS was never meant to turn a profit, but its economic well-being was severely damaged by that legislation.

Some white people, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, demand to hear that white lives also matter. But Black Lives Matter arose in response to 400 years of abuse, oppression, and white supremacy. Do these aggrieved white people really think they are in equal need of social justice?

Wearing a mask during the pandemic is a public health necessity meant to protect others. But as far as dangers to oneself go, it appears that we are all playing Russian roulette. Young, healthy people are more likely to dodge the bullet while high-risk people gamble against much more lethal odds.

George Orwell said, “Totalitarianism … attacks the objective concept of truth,” and that is what President Donald Trump and Fox News have been doing. It is not true that the constitutionally mandated postal service is doomed to fail or that voter fraud is a significant problem. It is not true that there has ever been a level playing field or equality between white and Black people. And Americans rejecting masks as an infringement on their liberties are ignoring basic scientific truths and their responsibility toward others during the pandemic.

As the late reporter Walter Lippman said, “There can be no liberty for a community which lacks the means by which to detect lies.”
