The Republican response to the impeachment and Senate trial of President Donald Trump essentially has been this: Trump is above the law and can do anything he wants. It would be farcical if it weren’t so obviously immoral and un-American.
Trump himself continues to repeat — in the face of all evidence — that the pivotal phone call was “perfect.” Such is the time-honored autocratic tactic of hammering home the Big Lie. As the historian Tacitus wrote long ago, “Crime, once exposed, has no refuge but in audacity.”
And, one might add, in the tarnished halls of the US Senate.
