This New Year's Day I read and listened to reports about various communities having traditions for bringing in the new year, similar to the nationally recognized and celebrated ball drop in New York City. Other regions and communities celebrate together, too, counting down with something relevant to their place and symbolic dropping into the new year. In Pennsylvania, for example, Hershey drops a giant foil-wrapped Kiss.
In Duluth we have the perfect opportunity. Let’s drop the Aerial Lift Bridge into the new year. Invite and gather the neighbors and our visitors in Canal Park to celebrate with the fog horn sounding at midnight, bridge lights flashing, and perhaps a street dance with a polar bear band prelude.
Cheers in 2020!
