The 5-cent plastic bag fee, per Duluth ordinance, could have been prevented if all retailers had done what Aldi stores and others have been doing. Since coming to Duluth and Superior, Aldi, like a few others, have offered and sold returnable grocery bags. This reduces environmental degradation.
I suggest that those who are against the new ordinance encourage retailers to provide the same service as Aldi and others. If everyone cooperates, we will not need the recently passed Duluth City Council ordinance.
Unfortunately, there are many plastic containers sinfully polluting and destroying our environment: thick plastic milk containers, etc. Former Duluth lawmakers Willard Munger, DFL, and James, Ulland, GOP, passed legislation many years ago to end this. Unfortunately the industry filed a lawsuit and stopped this bipartisan law.
