Reader's View: Larson, city leading for the environment

As we continue to witness rising winter temperatures, severe weather events, and Lake Superior warming faster than most of the planet's lakes, we applaud Mayor Emily Larson and Duluth city staff for taking action to support an economically vibrant and resilient environment.

Recently, representatives from the Duluth Energy Coalition (made up of members of the Citizens' Climate Lobby, Ecolibrium 3, Izaak Walton League, Sierra Club, MN Interfaith Power and Light, and Honor the Earth, as well as individual citizens) presented the mayor with more than 200 signatures to thank her for her forward thinking.

We also thanked Mayor Larson for investing in solar power, including energy and conservation as critical components of the Imagine Duluth 2035 Comprehensive Plan update, and for working toward upgrading the steam plant to clean energy.

We are proud to be part of a city that recognizes the benefits of responsible stewardship. These actions make financial sense in the here and now. We owe this effort to ourselves and, more importantly, to future generations. Remember that as we look forward. There is no Planet B.
