I am writing about a letter published in the April 22 issue headlined, "Pope and Castro are both dictating undemocratic ways."

This blatant ignorance and attack on the Catholic Church is shocking! The Roman Catholic Church only teaches what Jesus Christ taught, thus teaches respect, love and protection for women; and the Church has always been criticized for it!

Church fathers have "dictatorial power" over no one, nor have EVER had "total dictatorship over the secular or human elements;" that isn't even possible!! Where would this "dictatorial power" come from? If one does not believe in Roman Catholic teachings or one is not Catholic, one can choose to not follow Catholic teachings.

It was the Roman Catholic Church that supported science. It is the Church's fathers' knowledge of science that compels the Church to forbid contraception because it causes abortion and to forbid abortion because it kills the child. That's science.

The author says, "half of abortions are caused by lack of preventive measures, caused by poor education and fear of the church rules!" Huh? Children are taught in school how to put on a condom and all about STDs. Contraceptives are free and abortion is legal! If one doesn't believe and doesn't follow "church rules" why would there be any "fear of those rules"?

The Roman Catholic Church helps the poor of all races and creeds (you don't have to be Catholic). "Keep women in poverty and slavery?" How? Men in the Vatican realize that women are the heart of the home and the womb is the source of life. Holy Mother Church will not give permission, even to a powerful king (i.e., Henry the VIII) to discard his wife just because he wants another one.

By the way, the Vatican never allowed abortion at any time, according to newadvent.org.
