The rental house next door usually is occupied by college men. When I see a group moving in, I walk over to welcome them and ask their names, what they are studying, where they are from, etc. I take cookies. Later in the week, I take a list of neighbors' names (those who give permission), encouraging the students to call on us if they need anything. They get a description of our "family neighborhood" with the nearby school and church, with children walking by.
The upshot is that the students are seen as individuals and the neighbors are seen as individuals. Communication is much easier if problems come up. This has worked well for everyone.
