Candidate's View: Pick effective voice in St. Paul with strong northern roots
ABOUT THIS RACE: In an unusual twist, the every-10-years redrawing of legislative boundaries has resulted in incumbent legislators facing each other to represent the new Minnesota House District 7A. The candidates are Republican Rep. Spencer Igo of Wabana Township and DFL Rep. Julie Sandstede of Hibbing. The new district encompasses parts of Aitkin, Itasca, and St. Louis counties. Election Day is Nov. 8. Early voting starts Friday.
I am running to be your next state representative in House District 7A. I am currently serving our community as state representative for House District 5B.
I want to start by saying how much of a privilege it has been to serve our home for the past two years in St. Paul. The amazing support from our community to band together on the issues has been incredible. We still have much to do on our way to bringing our best days to reality, but I am confident we can make that happen as a community.
I want to make sure my stances on the issues are known. I am pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-labor, pro-law enforcement, and pro-mining. I believe in lower taxes, more freedom, and lifting up all people to create the best Minnesota.
I am an avid outdoorsman, and in my free time you can find me on a lake or in the woods with my dog Moxie tagging along.
I am a graduate of Grand Rapids High School and the University of North Dakota. I owe who I am in this life to being raised in our amazing communities of Itasca County. This place has been and always will be home to me — and that is why I am running, to keep making this place the best place to grow up and raise a family for all generations to come.
My message for our campaign is simple: Bring our best days to reality. That is what this is all about. By finding ways to bring our communities together and lift each other up, we can pass and champion legislation together to make all our lives better.
Serving in St. Paul, I have been working on just that. From passing legislation to streamline 911 telecommunicators to championing legislation to declare Minnesota a mining-friendly state, all my bills come from the ideas and passion of our home.
During these past two years serving in the Legislature, I have become a loud and outspoken voice for our home; that has made us heard and has gotten things done.
The Huber Project in Cohasset is one of my accomplishments in these first two years. Now, it is not an accomplishment because of what I did; it is because of what our community did. From every corner of our county, people came together to bring this project home — and we delivered. As we navigate the permitting process, I will continue to help as I can.
But this outlines another task we need to work on next. That is permitting reform, so that we don’t see projects get lost in a bottom desk drawer of a state agency.
I also want to share some endorsements I am humbled and proud to have received: IUOE Local 49, Minnesota Pipe Trades, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Minnesota Farm Bureau, and the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. These diverse and distinct groups all represent Minnesotans from all walks of life, and to have their support in our campaign of bringing our best days to reality is incredible.
We all are truly blessed to live and work in "God's Country" and treasure where we are from, who we are, and where we are going. I lead my life by thinking twice and acting once. I always look to lead with energy, passion, and resolve toward the best decisions for all our Northland citizens and communities. As your state representative, I always remember where I came from, who I represent, and why I serve you.
