Werner “Witz” Engelmeier, 92, of Cloquet, passed away with his sons by his side on March 19, 2020.

Werner was born to Barbara and Clem Engelmeier on October 31, 1927 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. After moving to Kelliher, Minnesota when he was young, he helped on the family farm and hunted and fished to help support the family. He served in the Navy in World War II and visited many countries while on the USS General W.G. Haan and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After the Navy he worked on the Great Lakes, Oneida Properties and finally at the St. Scholastica Priory.

Werner enjoyed fishing, hunting, softball, bowling and spending time at the cabin with all his special friends. He always enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved the warm winters in Arizona, but returned home to be closer to family in Minnesota.

Werner is survived by his children, Jeff (Claudia) Engelmeier, Roger (Sherri) Engelmeier, Scott (Julia) Engelmeier; grandchildren, Melissa (Nicholas) Plante, Matt (Kate) Engelmeier, Stephanie (Jordan) Svennes, Anna (Marshall) McClain; great-grandchildren, Piper Svennes, Easton Plante, Jaxon Engelmeier and Brooklyn McClain; and three great-grandchildren on the way; sister, Martina Herman; five nephews, their spouses and extended family.

The family would like to thank the staff at New Perspective Senior Living, past and present, for the love and care they provided for Werner and also for our family. Their devotion did not go unnoticed. He felt very loved and supported. We would also like to thank St. Croix Hospice for their care and support in his final days.

Per Werner’s wishes, the family will celebrate his life with a private gathering.
