Jim D. Gilbert

Jim D. Gilbert (JD), passed away on Dec 5, 2021. He was born June 22, 1938, in Park Rapids, MN, to Fay and Sylvia (Wright) Gilbert. Jim grew up on Orchard St in Proctor, MN, and graduated in 1956. He enlisted in the US Navy in January 1957, and served until September 1966. Jim served on many carriers and had tours in Vietnam during this time. He then worked for Lockheed and returned to Vietnam as an airplane mechanic. Jim’s career in law enforcement began in 1972 with Proctor Police, and continued as a Deputy Sheriff for St Louis County in 1972, retiring in 1993.

Jim had many enjoyable hunting and fishing trips with friends and family. He and Cindy enjoyed traveling in the 5th wheel and fishing mountain streams. He also was an avid trap shooter at Jack Meade Gun Club in Proctor, and later at Ben Avery Club in AZ.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty (Nub) Johnson, Joyce (Earl) Plummer, and Vi (Tom) Ward, and sister-in-law, MaryAnn Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, daughter Sandy (Duane) Ehle, son Scott, and grandsons Joseph (Emily) and James Ehle. He was very proud of his grandsons and their achievements. He is also survived by his brother Larry Gilbert, brother-in-law Bruce (Betty) Smith, sister-in-law Susan (Dennis) Hoel, and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held at a later date at the State of Mn Veterans Cemetery in Duluth, MN.
